Simple Sentence

A Simple Sentence is a group of words forming the smallest complete unit of the language having a Subject and a Predicate with only one Finite Verb in the Sentence.

Look at the following sentences:

a. Mr. John has gone to his factory.

b. My brother does not like sweets.

In these two sentences, "Mr. John" and "My brother" are the subjects and "has gone to his factory" and "does not like sweets" are predicates. There is only one finite verb in each of these sentences - "has gone" in the first and "does not like" in the second sentence.

Clause

A Clause is a group of words forming a part of a sentence, having a subject and a finite verb.

Look at the following sentences:

a. Hemant said that he would do my work.

b. When I went to school, the bell had already rung.

In the first sentence there are two finite verbs - "said" and "would do" and the subject of the verb "said" is "Hemant" and that of "would do" is "he". So, these are two clauses - "Hemant said" and "he would do my work" - and both are a group of words and a part of a sentence. Similar in the second sentence, "When I went to school" and "the bell had already rung" are two clauses as they are a group of words and a part of a sentence having "I" and "the bell" as subjects and "went" and "had rung" as finite verbs.

Phrase

A phrase is a group of words forming a part of a sentence without any subject or finite verb.

Look at the following sentences:

c. I went to the market in the evening.

d. A man of truth enjoys peace in life.

In these sentences, "to the market", "in the evening", "of truth" (also "a man of truth"). "In life" (also "peace in life") is a group of words and a part of a sentence without a subject and a finite verb and hence they are Phrases.
